Technical Operations Manager, Karonga

Karonga Prevention Study (KPS) is a diverse and expanding Medical Research programme which has been based in Chilumba in Karonga District for 30 years. The research is carried out in conjunction with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

KPS operates three scientific Laboratories with multiple ultra deep freezers for scientific sample storage. We run two large standby generators which are key to the operations. The field work is supported by a fleet of 60 motorcycles and 7 vehicles.

The Technical Operations Manager will be responsible for:

· Development and maintenance of infrastructure, buildings and equipment

· Maintaining and managing vehicle and motorcycle fleets.

· Management of vehicle and building workshops

· Overseeing the technical budget

· Health and Safety to protect staff in the workplace.

* Procurement, including liaising with suppliers and clearing agents (to confirm)

The successful applicant will hold a University Diploma and have wide technical experience relevant to site management in an isolated rural environment. He will be experienced in project planning and management as well as in the planning and execution of maintenance programmes. Sound computing skills including Word and Excel are required. Knowledge of refrigeration and air conditioning systems would be an advantage.

In line with our current research programme, the initial contract will be to 31 August 2011. It is envisaged that a new research programme will commence in September 2011 and that the contract will be renewed from that date.
